Shift Markets · Updated November 2026
FX brokers can offer crypto perpetual futures in two ways. They can stream a liquidity provider’s perpetuals, such as LMAX Group’s, into MT4 or MT5 through a bridge they already run, or they can run their own perpetuals venue alongside MetaTrader with a native module such as Shift Markets’ crypto derivatives platform.
A bridge is the quicker way to add perpetuals as extra symbols in MetaTrader. A native module lets the broker set its own leverage, fees and funding rates, cross-margin spot crypto and perpetuals, and offer spot crypto from the same platform.
The rules are the same either way. In the EU, ESMA said in February 2026 that perpetuals meeting the CFD definition fall under CFD rules, so retail clients get 2:1 leverage at most. In the UK, retail clients cannot be sold crypto derivatives at all.
What are the two ways to offer crypto perpetuals?
The two routes differ in who runs the market. With a bridge, the liquidity provider runs the contracts and the broker passes them through to clients. With a native module, the broker runs its own perpetuals venue and the technology provider supplies the engine and liquidity behind it. Vendor examples come from public pages as of November 2026.
| Bridge to a liquidity provider | Native perpetuals module | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the market | The liquidity provider | The broker, under its own brand |
| Funding rates | Set by the provider (every eight hours on LMAX) | Set by the broker in the back office |
| Leverage and fees | Broker sets margin groups within the provider’s limits | Broker sets leverage per instrument and its own fee structure |
| Spot crypto | Not included; needs a separate integration | Runs on the same platform, with cross-margin across spot and perpetuals |
| What changes in your stack | New symbols on MT4 or MT5, bridge configuration, 24/7 dealing cover | A derivatives module beside MT4 or MT5, with one client login and one KYC record |
| Examples | LMAX Group through Gold-i, MetaQuotes Ultency, Spotware cBridge or FXCubic | Shift Markets crypto derivatives platform |
How does the bridge route work?
The bridge route adds a provider’s perpetual contracts as new symbols on the broker’s MetaTrader server. LMAX Group, the institutional FX and crypto venue, launched perpetual futures in September 2025 for institutional traders and now lists 22 markets with funding applied every eight hours, according to iSAM Securities’ October 2026 announcement.
Gold-i, MetaQuotes Ultency, Spotware cBridge and FXCubic have connected to LMAX’s perpetuals since December 2025, and iSAM Securities Apex announced a connection in October 2026. If your bridge is one of them, the work is mostly onboarding: open the liquidity relationship, map symbols, set margin groups by client category and decide how funding payments show in the platform. Your CRM, cashier and back office do not change.
The trade-off is control. The contract specifications and funding rates belong to the provider, and the product stays inside MetaTrader, so clients who want to buy and hold coins need a separate spot integration.
How does a native perpetuals module work?
A native module gives the broker its own perpetual futures venue. On the Shift Markets crypto derivatives platform, the broker sets leverage per instrument, fees and funding rates in the Back Office, and chooses A-book or B-book handling. A market maker with liquidity aggregated from major crypto exchanges fills the order books from day one, and clients trade with Market, Limit and Stop Loss orders.
The same platform runs spot crypto, so clients can buy and hold coins and trade perpetuals from one account, with cross-margin across both. For FX brokers, the module runs beside MT4 or MT5 through Shift’s forex brokerage crypto integration: FX stays on MetaTrader, and clients use one login and one KYC record for both.
The trade-off is scope. A native module adds a product the broker runs, with its own risk, pricing and support, where a bridge adds a feed.
Which route fits which broker?
A bridge fits a broker that wants perpetuals as extra MetaTrader symbols, mainly for professional clients, and is happy to pass through the provider’s contract terms. If your bridge already connects to LMAX, it is the shortest path.
A native module fits a broker that wants spot crypto and perpetuals together, wants to set its own funding, leverage and fees, wants cross-margin across spot and perpetuals, or wants to run the product under its own brand rather than resell someone else’s. It also suits brokers adding crypto for the first time, because one integration covers both spot and derivatives.
What leverage can retail clients get on crypto perpetuals?
In the EU, retail clients get 2:1 at most. ESMA’s February 24, 2026 statement says perpetual contracts that meet the CFD definition fall within the national CFD product intervention measures, which cap retail crypto CFDs at 2:1 and require margin close-out and negative balance protection. Professional clients sit outside those caps.
In the UK, the FCA has banned the sale of crypto derivatives to retail consumers since January 6, 2021, so perpetuals there are for professional clients only. Other jurisdictions set their own limits, so check each market before you switch the product on.
The route does not change the rules. A perpetual streamed through a bridge and a perpetual the broker runs on its own platform are treated the same way for EU retail clients if they meet the CFD definition. The 100:1 leverage some providers advertise applies to institutional traders only.
What changes for risk and operations when perpetuals trade 24/7?
Perpetuals never close, so the dealing desk has to cover nights, weekends and holidays on either route. Three things need a plan before going live:
- Weekend risk: prices keep moving while FX and many hedging venues are shut, so exposure and margin calls continue without the usual break.
- Funding: clients holding positions pay or receive funding several times a day, whether the rate comes from a provider or the broker sets it, and the platform has to show it clearly.
- Leverage by client type: retail and professional clients need separate margin settings, and the system must stop retail clients from reaching professional leverage.
How does Shift Markets support perpetuals for FX brokers?
Shift Markets provides the native route: a perpetual futures module that FX brokers run alongside MetaTrader, on the same platform as spot crypto. The broker keeps its brand, its clients, its KYC and its balances.
Shift Markets, founded in 2009 in New York City, has powered more than 250 exchanges and brokerages, with over $2 trillion in total volume traded. Its SOC 2 Type 2 audit, conducted by BPM, found zero exceptions.
Case study: TD Markets
TD Markets, an FX broker operating in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania, used Shift Markets to go live with five new products on one platform and one back office: crypto spot, crypto derivatives, ZARC trading pairs, stablecoin remittances and prediction markets. “Shift Markets enabled us to evolve from an FX broker into a true multi-asset brokerage without the cost or risk of building in-house,” said Amar Ramith of TD Markets.
Bottom Line
FX brokers have two ways to offer crypto perpetuals. A bridge to a provider such as LMAX adds perpetuals as MetaTrader symbols on the provider’s terms. A native module such as Shift Markets’ lets the broker run its own perpetuals venue, set its own funding, leverage and fees, and offer spot crypto with cross-margin on the same platform. The regulatory limits are the same on both: 2:1 for EU retail clients and professional clients only in the UK.
Shift Markets runs spot crypto and perpetual futures alongside your existing FX stack, and you can go live in weeks, not months. Book a demo.
