How FX Brokers Add Crypto: Integration Paths Compared

How FX Brokers Add Crypto: Integration Paths Compared

Shift Markets · Updated October 2026

An FX broker can add crypto in four ways: stream crypto CFDs into MT4 or MT5 through a bridge, run a spot crypto module beside MetaTrader, open a separate crypto exchange, or accept crypto deposits only.

CFDs and deposits reuse the most existing infrastructure, while spot trading adds custody, wallets and on-chain compliance. With Shift Markets, adding crypto trading takes weeks, not months.

Regulation often picks the path for you: retail crypto CFDs are capped at 2:1 leverage in the EU, UK firms cannot sell crypto derivatives to retail clients, and the last MiCA transitional periods for existing EU crypto service providers ended on July 1, 2026.

How do the four crypto integration paths compare?

Vendor examples come from public pages as of October 2026 and are listed without ranking.

Path What clients get What changes in your stack Main regulatory question Vendor examples
Crypto CFDs on MT4/MT5 via bridge or LP Price exposure to BTC, ETH and other coins inside their existing MetaTrader account. No coins delivered. New symbols, a crypto price feed and execution route through the bridge, margin and risk settings for 24/7 markets Does your license cover crypto derivatives for your client base? Bridges: Centroid Solutions, PrimeXM. Crypto CFD liquidity: providers connected through your bridge
White label crypto brokerage module beside MetaTrader Buy, hold and withdraw real coins from the same client portal, while FX stays on MT4/MT5 Spot engine, wallets and custody, internal ledger, CRM sync for KYC and balances Do you need crypto-asset service authorization (such as MiCA) on top of your FX license? Shift Markets and other white label crypto brokerage providers
Separate crypto exchange A standalone exchange brand with order books, spot and possibly perpetual futures A full exchange stack, often a separate legal entity and team Exchange or crypto-asset service licensing, market surveillance, custody rules White label exchange providers, or an in-house build
Crypto deposits and payment rails only Fund and withdraw in BTC, ETH or stablecoins, then trade FX as before Payment gateway, wallet screening, conversion to account currency, cashier and CRM link Does accepting and converting crypto trigger a crypto registration where you operate? Shift Markets CryptoPay and other crypto payment gateways

How do crypto CFDs on MT4 and MT5 work through a bridge?

Crypto CFDs arrive as new symbols on your MetaTrader server, priced and executed by a crypto liquidity provider through your bridge. Clients trade BTC/USD on margin the way they trade EUR/USD and never hold coins. Your CRM, cashier and back office stay as they are.

PrimeXM’s XCore links MT4 through an MT4 Bridge and MT5 through an MT5 Gateway, and lets the dealing desk set A-book or B-book routing by client group and instrument. Centroid Solutions says its CS 360 bridge is integrated with over 300 liquidity providers and 17 trading platforms. If you already run one of these, the work is mostly onboarding a crypto liquidity source, mapping symbols and setting limits.

Crypto trades through the weekend, so pricing, margin calls, hedging and dealing-desk cover need a 24/7 plan, and volatility needs its own margin settings. In the EU, national rules that mirror ESMA’s 2018 product intervention cap retail crypto CFDs at 2:1, which means at least 50% initial margin. In the UK, the FCA has banned the sale of crypto derivatives to retail clients since January 6, 2021, so this path only serves professional clients there.

When does an FX broker need spot crypto instead of CFDs?

You need spot when clients want to buy, hold, transfer or withdraw real coins, or when you want crypto deposits to stay on your platform. Spot adds wallets, custody, an internal ledger, blockchain monitoring and travel rule data, which is a different operating model from CFDs.

A common setup keeps FX and CFDs on MT4 or MT5 and runs spot crypto on a separate engine connected to the same CRM. The client gets one login, one KYC record and one support desk. A white label crypto brokerage module shortens the project because the matching engine, custody integrations and Back Office already exist.

A broker that wants both can run spot on the crypto module and keep crypto CFDs on MetaTrader where its license allows.

Should an FX broker run a separate crypto exchange?

A separate exchange fits a broker that wants a new business line with its own brand, order books and perpetual futures. It carries the most overhead of the four paths, usually with its own licensing, market surveillance, liquidity and custody operations, and staff.

On February 24, 2026, ESMA said perpetual contracts offered to EU retail clients are likely to fall within the national CFD product intervention measures, including leverage limits, risk warnings and negative balance protection. Plan the product scope and the license together.

How do forex brokers accept crypto deposits?

Forex brokers accept crypto deposits through a crypto payment gateway connected to the cashier or CRM. The usual flow has five steps:

  1. The client picks a coin and network in the cashier.
  2. The gateway generates a unique deposit address for that transaction.
  3. The system waits for the configured number of blockchain confirmations and screens the sending wallet.
  4. The deposit converts to the account currency, or stays in a stablecoin if your account structure allows it.
  5. The CRM or cashier credits the trading account.

Each wallet should be tied to a verified client, screened for sanctions and illicit-finance exposure, and logged for audit. In the EU, the travel rule under Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 requires originator and beneficiary information on qualifying crypto transfers, and the EBA’s guidelines on it have applied since December 30, 2024.

Shift Markets offers CryptoPay, a crypto payment gateway for account funding. Deposits-only is the lightest path. It also prepares the ground for spot trading, because wallet screening and the ledger are already in place.

How does Shift Markets connect crypto to an existing FX stack?

Shift Markets, founded in 2009 in New York City, has powered more than 250 exchanges and brokerages, with over $2 trillion in total volume traded and 10 million registered end users on its platform. Three products apply to FX brokers:

  • Forex Brokerage Crypto Integration adds spot (“deliverable”) and derivatives crypto trading alongside FX, with liquidity aggregated from major crypto exchanges and A-book or B-book set in the Back Office.
  • Forex Platform is a white label brokerage platform with MT4 and MT5 capabilities, a client portal and CRM, and cloud hosting with failover across data centers.
  • CryptoPay is a crypto payment gateway that supports bitcoin, ethereum, USDC and USDT, issues a unique address per transaction, applies your confirmation rules and fees, and converts to your base asset automatically.

The Forex category of Shift’s Integrations Hub lists Centroid Solutions, PrimeXM, CurrentDesk, Syntellicore by Dynamic Works, Praxis, Ecommpay, Ozow and TAPaaS. The CurrentDesk integration (November 2025) syncs onboarding, KYC and back-office data between CurrentDesk’s CRM and the Shift Platform. The expanded Dynamic Works partnership (June 2026) connects Syntellicore’s onboarding, payments and IB workflows to Shift’s trading infrastructure.

On the crypto side, the Integrations Hub lists Coinbase, Binance, KuCoin, Crossover, B2C2 and Bitso for liquidity; Fireblocks, BitGo, Cobo, Fordefi, Copper and Utila for custody; Chainalysis, Elliptic, Sumsub, Scorechain and TRM Labs for KYC and transaction monitoring; and Notabene for the travel rule. Shift also completed a SOC 2 Type 2 audit covering August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026, conducted by BPM with zero exceptions.

Case study: TD Markets

TD Markets, an FX broker operating in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania, used Shift Markets to go live with five new products on one platform: prediction markets, crypto spot, crypto derivatives, ZARC trading pairs (BTC, ETH and USDT) and stablecoin remittances, all under one brand and one back office. “Shift Markets enabled us to evolve from an FX broker into a true multi-asset brokerage without the cost or risk of building in-house,” said Amar Ramith of TD Markets.

What are the alternatives to Shift Markets?

  • CFDs only, existing bridge: your bridge vendor’s liquidity network may be enough. Several crypto CFD liquidity providers deliver through MT4/MT5 bridges and FIX.
  • One vendor across liquidity, CRM and payments: some providers, such as B2Broker, sell crypto CFD liquidity, a CRM and crypto payments as a bundle.
  • In-house build: full control, with custody, the ledger, surveillance and controls evidence for auditors and banks all on your team.
  • Spot crypto and crypto funding on your current MT4/MT5 and CRM stack, with A-book or B-book control: this is the case Shift Markets is built for.

How should a COO choose between the paths?

  • Which jurisdictions and client categories (retail or professional) do you serve? The answer rules paths in or out before any vendor call.
  • Do clients want to own coins, or only trade the price?
  • Which bridge, CRM and PSP do you run today, and does the vendor have a live integration with each? Ask for a reference client on the same stack.
  • Who holds custody, and can the vendor show independent controls evidence such as a SOC 2 Type 2 report?
  • Who prices, hedges and staffs crypto risk on weekends?

Which crypto path should an FX broker choose?

FX brokers have four ways to add crypto, and regulation usually decides which ones are open. CFDs and deposits reuse the most of an existing MT4/MT5 stack, while spot trading and a separate exchange add custody, licensing and operations work.
